Privacy policy

The short version

ComfortFiles is built so that there is almost nothing to write a privacy policy about. The app collects no data. The website keeps only aggregate, cookie-free statistics.

The ComfortFiles app

  • No data collection. The app has no telemetry, no analytics, no crash reporting, and no account system. Your files and your activity never leave your Mac.
  • Full Disk Access stays local. If you grant Full Disk Access, it is used solely so the app can show you your own files. Nothing is read for any other purpose and nothing is transmitted.
  • Updates. The app periodically fetches a version file from our server to see whether a newer release exists. It sends no identifier of any kind — it is an ordinary web request, so our CDN logs it the way any web server logs any download (IP address, app version). We use those logs only to count roughly how many copies are in use. You can switch automatic checks off — in the welcome screen on first launch, or later in Settings — and check manually instead.
  • What’s new after an update. The first time the app runs a version it has not run before, it asks this website whether a page describing that release exists, and opens it if it does. It is the same kind of request as the update check above — no identifier, nothing about you or your files — and our CDN logs it the same way: an IP address and the page asked for. On its own it happens once per update, not on every launch, and never on a fresh install. It also happens when you choose About ComfortFiles, which opens that page when there is one and the usual About window when there is not.

The website

  • We use cookie-free, aggregate web analytics (page views, referrers). No cookies are set, no visitors are identified, and no data is shared with advertisers. That is why you see no cookie banner here.
  • Standard server logs (IP address, request path) are kept briefly by our hosting provider for security and abuse prevention.

Email

If you email [email protected], we keep the correspondence to answer you and improve the product. We never sell or share your address.

Buying a license

Checkout is handled by Freemius as merchant of record — the seller on your invoice, who collects and remits VAT and sales tax. Payment happens on their pages, so we never see your card details. Your name, email and billing country are held by them under their privacy policy; we see the resulting order, never how you paid.

Activating a license

Activating sends Freemius three things and nothing else:

  • the license key you entered;
  • a device identifier — a random value generated on your Mac, not derived from your hardware or anything about you, so the licence counts Macs rather than people;
  • your Mac’s name, so you can tell your machines apart. Macs are often named after their owner — if yours is, that is what we send.

A yearly license re-checks about every three days for renewal or cancellation; a lifetime license never re-checks. If a check fails, nothing happens — the app carries on working. The license is stored only on your Mac, and releasing it from the License panel removes it.
